The saying “Necessity is the mother of invention” certainly rings true for Heavens to Betsie owner Rosetta Greek. Her business started from the aftermath of losing
her job in the telecommunications industry in September of 2001. Five months later she had her business license in hand and was ready to start anew.
“It’s a classic phoenix rising from the ashes story,” Rosetta says.

It was through the encouragement of a Seattle Opera make-up artist, Anne McGowan, that Rosetta started her business. Opera is another passion

for her; she studied classical voice for 14 years and has been involved with Seattle Opera productions since 1988. It was while being primped for a role in Salome that she brought up the idea for her business. Her make-up artist became her first customer.

Rosetta creates hand-sewn accessories that are fun, fabulous, and functional. Coin purses, tampon totes, cosmetic bags, and potholders are just some of the unique product she makes. All her items are created with fabrics that come in retro-themed prints like 1940s pin-ups or

cowgirls. In Rosetta’s hands, kitsch is cool.

Owning a business has brought much joy to her life. Joy in hearing a woman in her 60s thank her for taking her back to her childhood. Joy in hunting for ideal fabrics. Joy in customers recognizing her works because they first saw them in boutiques in Hawaii or Baltimore. And joy in learning and growing her business from its start doing house parties, to selling at Pike Place Market, to wholesaling to retail establishments nationwide.
